Making your own baby food

Did you ever want to know how to make your own baby food? Do you want to feed your baby natural, healthy meals? In this post I will share how I make and store my own homemade baby food.

Making your own baby food may seem a bit daunting at first, but it really is simple, and the rewards are many! It's fun, easy, healthy, and frugal!

I pretty much vowed that I would never feed my baby that stuff from the store, but I definitely caved in with my first child because of the convenience of pre-packaged, pureed, serving sized foods all nice and ready to eat. I am ashamed of myself now for giving up on my resolutions so quickly. But since I am now hitting the second and third rounds of beginning solids with a baby, I am strengthening my resolutions once again.

Now please don't think that I judge you at all if you have chosen to use store bought baby food, because I really don't. That is why I want to point out that I didn't always make my own either. That said, I do want to encourage you that making your own baby food is easy, much more nutritious, and very worth it!

So in 6 simple steps, here's how I do it.

1) Prepare your tools. I use either a food processor, a blender, or a baby food grinder.

2) Wash your fresh foods if needed.

3) Cut up your vegetables, fruits, etc. into chunks and cook if required.

4) Put food into blender or tool of choice.

5) Blend, adding water or breastmilk until food has reached desired consistency.

6) Eat or store for later by freezing in ice cube trays. Once frozen, remove the food cubes from the tray and store in a labeled/dated ziploc bag in the freezer.

*If adding breastmilk it is best to add it right before serving. Do not add the breastmilk before freezing your baby food.

*Pictured food: prunes. Some of the twins' favorite foods right now are avocados, sweet potatoes, and prunes.

Awesome!

While we're not at the kid stage yet, I have ambitions of making my own too -- it's good to know it's doable :)

I would love to be there to make baby food with you! I have done my own but just for eating right away since my freeze is the size of a cube of sheets of paper there is no room for anything but meats. I really want to do better next time. I buy baby food but just fruit. Josiah never like the veggies though he will eat the veggies we eat. I bought the fruits mostly for the times we are out on the road or for a quick meal when I just can`t make anything.

Great Job Sarah! I am so proud of all that you are learning and doing and want to follow in your footsteps. So learn all you can and keep track of all the best tips for me.

I love how much I get to look up to you even though you are my little sister! :)

I made most of all my "squashed" baby foods when my daughter was eating that form of food. It was such an easy thing to do and it saved us loads of money. There is one bit of advice I can pass on though. I ended up going a little over board with it. I had everything you could imagine a kid would eat frozen. And TONS of it. By the time she moved on past "squashed" foods, and refused to eat them period, I still had bunches left in my freezer. I had nothing else I could do with them. No friends with kids that age either. The only thing I was able to make anything out of that my family would eat was mashed sweet potatoes, but just try getting my husband to eat strained green beans. :-) So unfortunately some went to waste. So my advice is to go at it slowly and don't go crazy like I did.
