Girl's Ruffled T-Shirt Skirt {Tutorial}

I used a men's t-shirt to make this Girl's Ruffled Skirt.  Upcycled stuff is so much fun!  Here's how you can do it too.  :-)

I didn't take pictures of the first part, but basically you just cut a straight line right under the armholes.  You should end up with a squarish or rectangular shape.  The bottom is the hemmed part.

You will need some elastic cut to approx. 2 inches smaller than the waist measurement.  Check it on your model to be sure it fits right.  {I used 1 inch elastic, but you can use whatever you like}.

Cut four 1 inch strips off the top of your t-shirt fabric square.  These will become your ruffles.

This is what you should have.

Clip the strips so you have four long pieces.  Two will make the top ruffle and two will make the bottom ruffle.

Set your machine to a basting stitch and sew down the middle of the strips {lengthwise}, attaching two strips together so that you have two strips total when finished.  Pull thread at the ends to gather.

Pin ruffles to skirt where you want them.

Sew the ruffles to the skirt by sewing down the middle of the strips {on top of your basting stitch}.

Using a serger or a zig-zag stitch, finish the top edge of the skirt.

Fold the top edge down to create a casing for your elastic.  Make sure that you will be able to slide the elastic in after the casing is sewn down.  Sew casing, leaving a 2 inch gap unsewn.

Put elastic into casing.  Using a safety pin atatched to the end of the elastic makes it easier to pull through.  Overlap the elastic ends and stitch together.

Stitch the opening in the casing closed.

Voila!  You're finished!

Another thing you could do is use the sleeves of the t-shirt to make pockets. Use the sleeve hem for the top of the pocket and either surge or zigzag stitch around the unfinished bottom and sides. Fold the zigzag stitching under and "applique" the pockets on the skirt.

You could also use the sleeves to add pockets to the skirt. Use the sleeve hem as the top of the pocket, then surge or zigzag stitch around the sides and bottom along the unfinished edges. Press the stitching under, and applique the pocket into place.

What a great idea - with a couple other cuts it would make cute pants too. Our local Dollar Tree has a bin of imperfect T-shirts that would be great for this project! I'll have to keep an eye out...

Oh I absolutely love it! Simple projects like this make me SO excited since I'm not a very . . .detailed sewer. :)

aquariangoddess & Heidi, Making pockets with the sleeves is a great idea! That would be a cute addition. I might try that on my next skirt! :-)
